About Benjamin Plumb - Get To Know me
I AM A LIFELONG introvert and have personally experienced the things I write about on this site.
For well over half a century I struggled with my own winning recipe, which kicked in when I was about ten years old. It called me to be rigorously methodical and process-oriented. I soon began custom-building a series of steps for whatever situation I was in. I believed that without doing so I would never be able to make it in an extroverted world.
The recipe did produce academic success. But otherwise it caused decades of dissatisfaction, unintended consequences, and distant relationships. It was not until I began writing my memoir a few years ago that I discovered how toxic the recipe had been. I also saw and how accidental had been the change that allowed me to detach from it.
My Background
A retired executive, I graduated from the Harvard Business School and worked in the construction, technology and healthcare industries. The latter included long stints at WebMD and UnitedHealthcare.
I speak Spanish, decent Portuguese and rusty French, having lived in Mexico, Panama, Chile, Brazil and France. I also served as a U.S. Army Intelligence Corps officer in Vietnam.
As a result of my winning recipe I sustained both a bankruptcy and a divorce. My experience is a case study in how unworkable a winning formula can be for an introvert.
I learned from the divorce and soon afterwards met the love of my life, my wife Sandy of almost forty years. Every day she brings me inexpressible joy. And after uncoupling from my winning recipe over a decade ago I finally attained the financial success that I had always sought.
Sandy and I survived the loss of almost everything when Hurricane Andrew hit Miami in 1992. We have four children and ten grandchildren, and now live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. I am committed to doing whatever I can to help introverts of any age loosen the hold that their winning recipe has over their lives.
